Before the broadcast of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass on PBS’ “Great Performances,” Marin Alsop and Paulo Szot will head up a virtual panel discussion beginning at 8:15 p.m. (Central) May 15 on the Ravinia Festival’s Facebook page.
The monumental Mass, with Alsop leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and starring the Tony Award-winning baritone as the Celebrant, anchored Ravinia’s multi-season salute to the Bernstein centennial. Joining them on the panel will be Welz Kauffman, Ravinia president and CEO; Josephine Lee, artistic director of the Chicago Children’s Choir and Vocality; Joshua Chodoroff, director of the Highland Park High School Band, and moderator George Preston, general manager and vice president of WFMT-FM.
After Ravinia presented the local professional premiere of Mass in 2018 with Alsop and the CSO, the response was so great that the festival decided to reprise the production in 2019. Returning for the encore were Alsop, Szot, the CSO and virtually the entire lineup, which included two local choirs. That performance was taped for the PBS series “Great Performances,” and will air locally at 9 p.m. May 15 and 1 p.m. May 17 on WTTW-Channel 11. It also will be streamed on pbs.org/gperf and the PBS Video app. For more information about the pre-broadcast panel, click here.
