Before the second concert at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra participated in master classes with students of the Shanghai Conservatory. The educational sessions were organized by the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute in cooperation with the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, assisted by Li-Kuo Chang, acting principal viola, and Prof. Liu Zhaolu, chairman of the conservatory’s orchestral instrument department.
Along with the master classes, other CSO musicians visited a retirement home and performed a chamber-music concert. Then it was on to the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, where Music Director Riccardo Muti led the CSO in a program of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade. From Shanghai, the orchestra heads to Beijing, for concerts on Jan. 25-26.
