In San Diego, on the fourth stop of their 2017 U.S. Fall Tour, Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed Oct. 18 at the Jacobs Music Center-Copley Symphony Hall, presented by La Jolla Music Society. It was a special occasion because philanthropists Joan and Irwin Jacobs, whose bequest helped to establish the Jacobs Music Center, attended the concert and were celebrating Irwin Jacobs’ 84th birthday, which also happened to be on that very day, Oct. 18. “What better gift could there have been than this concert,” wrote in critic Marcus Overton in the San Diego Union-Tribune, “played to a sold-out house.”
