Riccardo Muti, music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, has been selected as the 2014 commencement speaker for Northwestern University’s graduation ceremonies in June. The maestro also will receive an honorary degree from the university.
The ceremony, set for June 20 at NU’s Ryan Field in Evanston, also will bestow honorary degrees upon R&B/soul icon Stevie Wonder, actress Cloris Leachman (an NU alum), economist Richard Easterlin and museum chief Sara Bloomfield, director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Last year, Muti delivered the commencement speech for the DePaul School of Music. He will return in early June for his concluding residency of the current CSO season.
