We start a three-week series with this program of the Truth to Power festival from the 2013/14 season. The festival focused on music from the 1930s and ’40s, through the works of Britten, Shostakovich, and Prokofiev who were each making music that spoke to the tenor of their time and place. Jaap van Zweden conducted all the concerts in the festival. As a bonus, we include a work dating from World War II by Igor Stravinsky, conducted on CSO Resound by Pierre Boulez.

Shostakovich Five Fragments
Britten Sinfonia da Requiem
Prokofiev Symphony No. 5
Originally recorded at concerts on May 31 and June 3, 2014

Stravinsky Symphony in Three Movements (Pierre Boulez, conductor. From CSO Resound)

Program notes for the first three works may be read here, and those for the Stravinsky symphony can be found here. Information on the CSO Resound recording is on this page.

This program will be available until Feb. 3, 2018
